CHARITY, EVENTS & ACTIVITIES PAGE
On behalf of Wai'anae High School, I'd like to express my deep appreciation for the generous gift of two $100 gift cards to Foodland bestowed on November 23 of this year. Below is a description of how one of those gift cards was used: A recipient of one of the foodland gift cards is a 9th grader here at Wai'anae High School. She lives with her grandmother, 2 younger siblings, and 2 younger cousins. Student had been on our online platform and really struggled but as soon as she switched and was allowed to come to campus, she has started to thrive! Not only has she done well academically, but coming on campus allowed us to get to know her a bit. Within the first week, she mentioned how grateful she was to be on campus so that she could get breakfast and lunch, which she hasn't had since the pandemic started (even though we offer it as "grab and go" transportation is an issue at home). She also asked if she would be able to get a second lunch, though as she is always hungry. On Monday before Thanksgiving, she heard her 2 math teachers talking about groceries - what they still needed to pick up for Thanksgiving - and she mentioned that she wasn't going to be able to have Thanksgiving due to money being so tight.
When presented with the gift card, she was so excited and knew she wanted to use the money to help her family have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Due to transportation being an issue, her VP took her to the Sack N Save in Nanakuli after school on Wednesday. She brought a clipboard to track her budget. Her grandmother made sure she got the turkey, ham, potatoes, and celery first, but she was able to pick out a dessert by herself, which made her so happy! There was a little money left after the staples were purchased and she asked if she could get a special treat - Fruit Gushers - as a surprise for her younger siblings since it is a luxury that they are not usually allowed.
The student and her family were incredibly grateful for the gift card and the opportunity to have a wonderful family Thanksgiving, one that they will not soon forget ! We still have 1 gift card which will be given out before the Christmas holiday break. We will be sure to share details of that gift as well. We sincerely appreciate your generosity. "With gratitude and Aloha"
